FOOTBALL fans on their way back to Melbourne from Geelong have been hit by road delays due to roadworks.
The planned roadworks have closed two of the three lanes along Princes Fwy, leaving the traffic at a standstill. Works along the M80 Ring Rd, Tullamarine Fwy and Monash Fwy have also stopped traffic.
Angry motorists have taken to social media with some claims to have some delays of more than three hours to get home.
Twitter uses Liz Dag said she was in a standstill for three hours.
"What idiotic idea to close Geelong Hwy after Cats v Saints game? 3 to 4 hours to Melb! People still sit @ 9:30 Beyond stupid, but it's VIC Roads brainless," she said.
VicRoad's website shows delays of up to 30 minutes.
Danielle Murray said on Facebook that the family was delayed for almost an hour.
"Absolutely awful planning of Vicroads. Roadworks closes 2 lanes city bound on M1 immediately after Geelong vs St Kilda game at Kardinia Park," she said.
"We've been delayed 49 minutes to get home from football. Atrocious Vicroads."
Football player Terry Wallace said on Twitter: "Smart move Vic Roads to make roadworks at Geelong Hwy on the last day of holidays and one evening by Footy in Geelong. 90 minutes to Little River is madness.
